The Dunkirk City School District is mourning the loss of Danielle Russell, the devoted principal of School 5, who passed away on Saturday. Her passing comes after she had recently taken a medical leave to focus on her health, as announced on March 23. Superintendent Brian Swatland shared the news in a letter to the district, expressing the deep impact Russell had on the students, families, and staff she served.
Russell joined the Dunkirk City School District in 2021, initially serving as the principal of School 7 and Director of Special Education. Her leadership and dedication soon led her to assume the role of principal at School 5, where she continued to demonstrate a deep commitment to education and the well-being of every student. Superintendent Swatland described her as “a devoted and caring administrator who loved our district and the family and students she worked with at School 5,” highlighting the positive influence she had on the school community.
Throughout her time at School 5, Russell was known for creating a welcoming and supportive environment for both students and staff. She was admired not only for her professional excellence but also for her warmth, compassion, and genuine care for the people around her. Her dedication helped nurture a strong sense of family within the school, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of working with her.
During this period of transition, Carol Smith will serve as interim principal at School 5, ensuring continuity and support for students and staff while the district navigates this difficult time.
Russell’s family has requested privacy as they cope with their loss and has asked the community to continue keeping them in their prayers. In her memory, they have established a GoFundMe campaign to create an education-based scholarship in her honor, allowing her legacy to endure by supporting future generations of students.
Danielle Russell will be remembered as an inspiring educator, a caring leader, and a devoted member of the Dunkirk community. Her dedication, compassion, and commitment to her students and staff have left an indelible mark, ensuring her memory will live on through the lives she touched
