St. Clair Shores, MI — It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mia Fountain, 68, of St. Clair Shores, Michigan. A devoted mother, cherished friend, and respected educator, Mia passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026, surrounded by family after a courageous battle with illness.
Born on August 14, 1957, in Detroit, Michigan, Mia Elaine Fountain devoted her life to uplifting others through teaching, civic engagement, and compassionate service. A lifelong resident of the Metro Detroit area, she was known throughout St. Clair Shores and neighboring communities for her warm spirit, sharp intellect, and boundless generosity.
Mia graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor’s in Education and earned her Master’s in Curriculum Development from Wayne State University. She dedicated over 35 years to educating young minds in the St. Clair Shores School District, where her passion for learning and encouragement helped shape generations of students. As a veteran teacher, Mia was much admired for her innovative teaching methods and her tireless work to make learning accessible to all.
Family was always at the center of Mia’s life. She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Thomas Fountain; her daughter, Emily (Aaron) Hughes; her son, Daniel Fountain; and her grandchildren, Lucas and Sophia Hughes. Mia’s warmth and love extended beyond her immediate family to a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and former students who remember her as a mentor, confidante, and guiding light in their lives.
A pillar in the St. Clair Shores community, Mia participated in numerous local initiatives. She served on the board of the St. Clair Shores Literacy Council, volunteered with the Lakeview Senior Center, and organized charity drives supporting families in need. Her leadership helped bring vital resources to the community, and her legacy of service continues to inspire.
Mia’s love of the arts and nature was well known. She was an avid reader, a passionate gardener, and found joy in the community theater. Every summer, Mia could be found tending her award‑winning rose garden or sharing stories with neighbors about her latest literary discoveries.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 9, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Lakeside Funeral Home, 21200 Harper Ave, St. Clair Shores, MI 48080. A memorial service celebrating Mia’s life will take place on Saturday, April 10, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Peter’s Community Church, followed by a reception at the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Mia’s memory be made to the St. Clair Shores Literacy Council or the Michigan Education Foundation, organizations that reflect her lifelong passions.
